about

This song was written with Richmond Elementary 4th graders in Stillwater, OK during a Monty Harper residency in the spring semester 2013. They were inspired by a visit from the Oklahoma City Zoo during which we met a European ferret in person, and learned about the zoo's efforts to bring black-footed ferrets back to Oklahoma.

lyrics

Round-eared and cute, they leap among the rocks
Like long furry noodles wearing short black socks
They have beady little eyes, and masks upon their faces
Their noses and their whiskers are for underground spaces
But their prairie homes are ruined ‘cause we didn't have a clue
So now we only see them in the zoo.

Bring back the black footed ferret
Bring em back bring em back
We need to make em feel at home now
In their Oklahoma habitat
Bring back the black footed ferret
We brought em back from the brink
Now bring em back to Oklahoma
Don't ever let em go extinct

They were the ninjas of the prairie, slinking through the night
Sneaking up on prairie dogs to grab a tasty bite
But the prairie dogs were poisoned. Their numbers went down
It's getting pretty rare to find a prairie dog town
That's why we nearly lost the ferrets, and that's just wrong
So now you know the reason for our song

Bring back the black footed ferret
Bring em back bring em back
We need to make em feel at home now
In their Oklahoma habitat
Bring back the black footed ferret
We brought em back from the brink
Now bring em back to Oklahoma
Don't ever let em go extinct

Only 18 ferrets were left alive
But captive breeding is letting them thrive
Anyone could help them, you or me
Go to black footed ferret dot o r g
Black footed ferret dot o r g

Bring back the black footed ferret
Bring em back bring em back
We need to make em feel at home now
In their Oklahoma habitat
Bring back the black footed ferret
We brought em back from the brink
Now bring em back to Oklahoma
Don't ever let em go extinct
Yeah bring em back to Oklahoma
Don't ever let em go extinct
