Daddy do we have to eat this food Yes you do Honeys please don’t plead But why Daddy defenses are disgusting Baby caterpillars please eat your milkweed Just eat it / Do we have to You have to / Please don’t make us Have courage Just the thought makes our stomachs ache Just eat it It has hair and glue - ew The glue’s too sticky - icky And all that hair gives us a scare It’s so rough - and prickly Just eat it / Do we have to You have to / Please don’t make us Have courage Just the thought makes our stomachs ache Just eat it It tastes bitter - ew It’s poison - icky All that wax won’t let us relax We keep slipping off - it’s tricky Just eat it / Do we have to You have to / Please don’t make us Have courage Just the thought makes our stomachs ache Just eat it You have to eat this tasty treat. At least you have to try If you don’t get enough nutrition I’m afraid you’re going to die Just eat it / Do we have to You have to / Please don’t make us Have courage Just the thought makes our stomachs ache But I guess we’ll have to Eat it Crunch Delicious! I told you so!

Effective Detective, Where did they go? The monarchs are dying Their numbers are low Effective Detective, Use your microscope Bring us an answer Give us some hope Effective Detective, oh what will you do? Monarchs are in trouble, oh what will you do? Parasites are lurking, oh what will you do? Detectivus Plexippus, oh what will you do? Effective Detective Is it parasites? The butterfly larvae Have lost their appetites Effective Detective See the stringy white goo Hanging from the chrysalis Is it a clue? Effective Detective, oh what will you do? Monarchs are in trouble, oh what will you do? Parasites are lurking, oh what will you do? Detectivus Plexippus, oh what will you do? She investigates with her scientific mind Like Scooby Dooby Doo, with all the clues she can find Is it protozoa or the Tachinid fly? When butterflies die, she figures out why Effective Detective, oh what will you do? Monarchs are in trouble, oh what will you do? Parasites are lurking, oh what will you do? Detectivus Plexippus, what will you do?

It was a lovely day I was getting ready for flight Then the humans started a fire It burned all through the night Why are you burning my home? Why are you burning my home? I have a need for milkweed I have a need for milkweed I have a need for milkweed, yeah The fire was rising higher I knew I’d have to go So I prepared to leave my home I was flying to Mexico Why did you burn my home? Why did you burn my home? I have a need for milkweed I have a need for milkweed I have a need for milkweed, yeah I really missed my milkweed While I was down in Mexico Then it was time to lay some eggs So I flew all the way back home I feared what I would find The ground all burnt and black But to my great surprise All the milkweed had grown back Thank you for burning my home Thank you for burning my home I have a need for milkweed I have a need for milkweed I have a need for milkweed, oh yeah

(milkweed) I thought you were my friend But look what you just did You laid your eggs so my leaves will feed your kids I’m poison, don’t you know And I’m tough to chew I’ll give them little mouthfuls of my Glue - Now… just shoo! This is my dilemma, Sis, Are you my friend or nemesis? We co-evolved to fight like this Are you my friend or nemesis? (butterfly) My larvae eat your leaves Yeah, I guess that’s true But I also do my best to help Pollinate you You need me to survive I’m your friend yeah not your foe And if you don’t want that I guess I’m gonna go… oh… This is my dilemma, Sis, Are you my friend or nemesis? We co-evolved to fight like this Are you my friend or nemesis? It’s complicated, it’s hard to understand Are you my enemy or my friend? Can I trust you? I don’t know Are you on my side or are you my foe This is my dilemma, Sis, Are you my friend or nemesis? We co-evolved to fight like this Are you my friend or nemesis? This is my dilemma, Sis, Are you my friend or nemesis? We co-evolved to fight like this Are you my friend or nemesis?
